Q: As a child did you dream of being a hook king, and if that wasn't your goal, what are you intended aspirations in the music buisness?

Being VP of A&R, I work on every album for every group at Bad Boy. I edit videos - I want to do everything, really. But basically, coming up with the hooks is just a writing skill that i have.

Q: How were you picked to do the hooks?

They call me Joe Hooker and the artists just want me on there. They already know all the work that I've done has remained in the family.

Q: Have you ever done a hook for a song or artist that you disliked?

No, not at all

Q: What's your average fee for doing a hook on a song?

Can't talk about that now. The average price? I'm not sure, everyone's diffrent, you understand? Right now, I'm basically creating a whole new buisness. People might not look at it that way, but that's how i look at it.

Q: What are some of your all-time favorite hooks?

I don't know. My all-time favorite hooks are really just the stuff that i do. I've never really heard any chorus that really, really drove me crazy.

Super Producer Deric "D-Dot" Angelettie is approaching his 10th year as a veteran of the music industry. Unfortunatley, rumours of a legal battle with puff and an Incindent with the press have greeted him. Happy Anniversary.

Deric sits in a swiwel chair in the middletown Manhattan recording studio that also serves as an office for his new record company, Crazy Cat Catalogue through Columbia/Sony. In the lounge outside the recording facility a huge projection TV blares Cool Brezze's "Watch for the Hook" and the burly security guards and guests lounge on couches and love seats, obvilous to the Chaothic movements of the staff, who scurry from room to room gathering reels of tapem CD's, DATs and paperwork. Angelettie is just frantic as he jumps up every few minutes to catch calls from clients and other Bizniz assoicates. His grey polo top and Blue jeans are hanging semi-low and baggy from the days constant moves. To top of it, Mark Pitts(Manager of The Notorious BIG, Changing Faces and the Madd Rapper) and A&R Kirk Lightburn of Bystorm Entertainment are there to talk buisness and listen to tracks for their latest signee - a female MC named Blue of the Group One Life to Live. The beats run the gamut from shaker, triangle and chime laced dance numbers to hooligan musicals. Following his track record of putting out ass-bouncing club hits, Pitts and his partners nod respectivley to the hard shit but decide to go for the danceable stuff thats been proving to work for previous artists like Tracey Lee.

D-Dot has a lot of stuff on his plate to chew on. He's worked on Nas I Am album, Tracey Lee's upcoming untitled album and Black Rob's Life Story, along with his two groups on Crazy Cat, Fierce and Black, and Desert Roze. Derics most anticipated realese, however is the Madd Rapper album due out this spring. The masses want to know what to expect. Is it comedy? Will the Madd Rapper rhyme? Or will he just talk shit like on the skits of every Bad Boy album since 1997? Judging from what he's recorded rite now, it's all of the above. The Madd Rapper comes off as a rap artist. His lyrics are indeed comical but also sharp and cleverly delivered.

"Hold up - I got some other shit" Deric says in a monotone and pops a new tape into the DAT machine. Like a cartoon character, he bounces into action, dancing around the small recording lab, waving his arms to accent the beats highlight. Theres a right arm wave to a sparkling high hat pattern and a low lean as he punches in unison to the bouncy, bottom filled bassline. "How about this one?" D-Dot asks with his back to his comrades. "Thats hot i want that". Pitts grins emphatticly. After listening to brief segments of other beats, Deric calls in a member of his staff for a blank tape and begins dubbing.

"Im trying to make classics," Deric says of his longevity. "Im not trying to make a joint thats going to spin for three months, and then you aint hearing about it no more. You're going to hear 'Its all about the Benjamins', 'Hypnotize' and Tracey Lees 'The Theme' for the rest of your life." And that may just be the case.

Chances are, if it's been made in the mid- to late 90's and theres a Bad Boy artist(or affiliate) on it, Derics fingerprints are all over the track. Unlike many other of his productions peers, Angellettie played the shadows. When the East Coast sound began it's renaissance, beatmasters like Wu-Tangs RZA, Gang Stars DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Large Professor clogged the credits of countless albums. Deric laid in the cut, mixing up musical brew that launched artists like Biggie, Puffy, Jay-Z, LL Cool J and Mase as they brought rap music back to its Mecca, New York City. Yeah, Tracey Lee's 'The Theme' made muthafuckas want to dance all night and sip bubbly, but D-Dots shine intesified when Puffys 'Its all about the Benjamins' exploded in late 97. In clubs all over NYC, Dj's banged the record way before it was realesed commercialy. The funked out guitar loop, reversed break and hook("So what you wanna do/Wanna be ballers/Shot callers, brawlers") mad clubgoers elbow each other like christmas shoppers in the Tickle Me Elmo aisle at Toys R Us. Everybody wanted to get snuffed. "My reaction was like 'Oh Shit'" says Bad Boy executive VP Jeff Burrughos. "We only made a hundred copies of the record. When people(DJ's) go out their way to get the record [DJ's pressed up their own copies of acetate], you know that a song has long legs to stand on."

"It's all about the Benjamins" broke ground at the 1997 How can i Be Down? music convention in Miami. The joint premiered on a 12" single exclusivley for radio and club DJ's, to set the stage for puffs new entourage, including The LOX and Mase. Then the desicon came to realese the song as a commercial single Quick-fast. According to Deric he didnt even know that song would blow the way it did. "Puff came to me with this record and wanted me to do something with it" he says while adjusting the volume on his 24-Track Einstein mixing board. "It was really fast, and i slowed it down and layed some more shit on top of it and it was ready."

With that, Derics sound began to gain momentum with the masses and become passionatley desired by artists who wanted the Bad Boy touch. D-Dot's cinematic musical craftmanship filled a void that rode the momentum of G-Funk and gangsteristic thump the Westside laid down. Only it took the dramatic sounds of the Dancefloors on the East. Although Angelettie takes pride in his talent, he's quick to give it up for Puffy, who's been criticized for taking credit for most Bad Boy productions.

"People confuse a person that makes beats with a person who is a producer" says Deric "Puffy doesent make beats, Puffy produces records. Most of his producers are Beat-Makers that are learning how to produce records. Because someone makes a beat on a drum-machine dont mean they can produce a whole song. To produce you have to see a vision before its done, to know how to coach vocals, mix and [do] all the nescessary things. Puff does that."

Deric himself came under criticsm last November, when he was arrested for an alleged attack on Blaze magazines editor in chief Jesse Washington, a charge which D-Dot attorneys deny. News programs smelled blood and ran stories on rap industry beatings, and Deric 'D-Dot' Angelettie name became household. In the eyes of too many members of the media and the public, a violent rapper/nigger beat nigger journalist to an ignorant pulp. All the more reason to knock hip-hop down. Topping Billboards coveted charts , out selling rock bands, influencing the style of the entire planet, providing thousands of jobs and entreprenuerial oppertunites to the young and ambitous muthafuckas in the streets mean nutting! This rap shit must stop!

Regarding this situation, Angelettie exhibits the composed appaerance of that older kid around the way who got smacked by a younger dude in a pathetic attempt to get props. It's the "Im not going to sweat that, niggas know the deal" look. Unable to comment on the Incident because of legal reasons, Deric feels that the media did exactly what was expected. "The media did a beatufiul job" he snickers. "Covering bullshit. I commend them" Although sickened by the way his name claimed fame, Angelettie harbors no ill feelings towards the news outlet. "All this is just going to help Crazy Cat Catalog sell a lot of records. Thank you very much"

In 1990 before the scorn of journalists, praise of artists and dates in courts, the Brooklyn-born only child of a black father and Puerto Rican mother was a MC in the rap duo 2 Kings in a Cipher, with his partner Amen-Ra. The groups debut album From Pyramids to Projects, achieved minimal success in 1991, but their spoken word single "For the brother who aint here" caught the ears of a few underground kids who still held on the late 80's Black awarness movement. By 1992, BAHIA Records had folded but 2 Kings remained on the roster of the parent company, RCA Records, Eventually poor sales and a management change at RCA caused 2 Kings in a Cipher to lose their deal and join the stockpile of hungry rap groups.

Salvation came soon there after, when 2 Kings in a Cipher performed with Leaders if the New School and Brand Nubian at Puffys 'Daddys house' jam at Red Zone in New York. " I was still living in DC and puff was like 'Come home im about to do my Bad Boy shit'" Deric says, sliding between mixing board and DAT Machine "I came home in August 1993 and thats when i started fucking with him"

While maintaing a job at the Awarness Communications bookstore at Medgar Evers College in Crown Eights, Brooklyns, Angelettie reguraly checked Puff in Scarsdale, NY, where he was staying with his producers Nashiem Myrick, Poke(From TrackMasters) and Chucky Thompson, sculpting Bad Boy. Finally in 1994(The years of Notorious BIG and Craig Mack), Deric left Awarness Communications and devoted all his time to Bad Boy, while Ron Lawrence(Amen-Ra) moved from DC to LA to help fellow Howard alumini Shai with their second album, Blackface. In 1996, he reconnected with D-Dot to form the beat team Mystery System and join the Hitmen. Along with producer, D-Dot played the role of Vice President of A&R for Puff Daddys Empire.

On the Notorious BIGs second album, 1997's "Life after Death" the Madd Rapper, the quintessential starving artist, made his debut. "What are u do mad about?" asked fictious character Shae on the untitled skit. Screaming in hoarse, rambunctions tone, The Madd Rapper retorted "Niggas is making $500,000 videos, they driving hot cars, they got bithces. Im still living with my moms".

Frustrated by the chastisement from hip-hops unforgiving purists, Puffy came up with the idea of returning fire with an angry rapper who criticized him for getting money. "The concept of doing an Hating MC was Puffs idea" says Deric half-joking " I sat at home thinking and was like Yeah i can do this" Angered by the Madd Rapper message, member of the underground rap community grumbled over the character. According to Angelettie however the Madd Rapper isnt against the underground movement or making mockery of the struggles of independent artists. Its a taste of what is camp has been getting. "How can i be against the Underground? Im underground all day everyday" he stresses "I make commercial records to eat".

Believe it or not, D-Dot does maintain his underground roots. On the Underground Railroad, DJ Ashknuckles and Madd Rappers mixtape, the beats have the underground hip hop trump, totally devoid of R&B choruses and radio happy production. So to say that Derics sound is limited to primetime radio slots would be an outright lie.

"The Madd Rapper is mocking the haters - not the rappers that are broke and struggling" he says, slightly raising his pitch. "Because a nigga got something i want, why hate on him for it? Just go get yours. If you have to hate on me to get your own, that means your nothing". In additon to dealing with the haters, Angelettie has also faced rumour of a feud with Sean Puffy Combs. Story has it that because the Madd Rapper made his debut on a Bad Boy realese, the character belonged to Puff. But it was also said that because Deric came up with the Character it belongs to him. "There was no dispute that was a media thing" D-Dot quips "What people heard was the Madd Rapper not wanting to be tha Madd Rapper - he just wanted to be a rapper... There was no dispute me and Puff are the Executive producers under my label Crazy Cat".

Deric admits that he was a madd rapper once, enraged by the politics and bullshit of the rap industry. Experience has grown him up and his frustration is focused. Anyone who says money doesent change u in bullshittin which is why maintaining morals and focus is the careers-defying feat is. And it can be Evel-Knievel difficult when thos who dont have what you've got want what you have.

"Because my womans bad, you want mine as opossed to getting your own" he asks rhetorically. Deric explains "Its not like it's us against you its were here and u can get in, too. Look at him(motions to Mark Pitts) hes not keeping a broke nigga down. If you got money coming in you keep got to keep getting money in cause you can easily go back to being broke".

What keeps Derics dough flow running in is production. The music excites him. When he pumps beats in the studio, he listens with the intesity of a Shaolin dispiclie and peeps out the songs intriances. If a snare drum is too low he puts it in too check. If the MC is sloppy with the Deliverey, the takes redone. Angelettie isnt being anal attentive . Thats what seperates a good song from a classic just ask Micheal Jackson. Wheter its a dance record or some grimy, back alley dumpster shit, he wants the music to tell a story. Thats the reasoning behind, say, the gothic trumpets in Puffys Victory.

"Keeping it real and telling your life story on records is cool, but how many people really want to know that?" D-Dot asks while tugging at his black knit PD-embroided cap and throwing back pistachios. "You can talk about your life, but it got be entertaining. If it's not entertaining it doesent sell. Ninety five precent buisness, five precent entertainment. You have to make a story out of a song, wheter its a party record, street joint, gangster or whatever". Even though he has tremenadous artistic expectaions from the song writers, Angelettie puts equal preassure on himself sometimes going through 40 to 50 ideas before he comes up with one he deems worthy. "The first thing is that the tracks gotta be nutty" he quickly snaps "If i can sweat off of a track even before the vocals are done, I know my battle is done".

As the Bystorm meeting winds down, Deric lets out a hearty sigh and prepare to venture off to Daddys house studio. From his eyes you can tell that there have been many sleepless nights and anticipation of many more. D isnt a glitzy star - his wardrobe betrays that fact - but he likes it that way. The light doesent attract him.

"I love to be in the background" he admits "Im a family man and a buisness man. I dont neccessarily need the limelight; i just want the check. I dont care how much as long as i can eat well".

There must be some kind of renaissance going on. As in da Vinci's era, many smart, talented people in our multi-media world are no longer content being good at just one thing. Witness Jennifer Lopez, actress, singer, song-writer. Having brought depth and sensuality to starring roles opposite George Clooney in Out of Sight and Sean Penn in U-Turn, the 29-year-old actress single--handedly expanded Hollywood's infamously closed mind about what a female lead should look like. Soon she'll give her comedic chops a try opposite Brendan Fraser in The Wedding Planner which starts filming this fall, and the upward arc of her acting career shows no sign of peaking any time soon. In addition, Lopez recently took a serious leap into pop music superstardom with her debut album, On the 6, which has already gone platinum. Every bit as diverse as her career, the disc fuses hip-hop, R&B, and salsa into a seamless whole, sewn tightly together by Lopez's strong, honeyed vocals. One of the producers of On the 6 is also the publisher of this magazine, and something of a renaissance man himself: Sean "Puffy" Combs. His resume is well-known: Rapper. Producer. Executive. And now, journalist. In the following conversation, Puffy gets the scoop from his homegirl, Ms. Lopez, on the stuff all the other magazines missed--digging particularly deep for a revelation about a certain romantic relationship.

PUFF DADDY: Hey, what's up.

JENNIFER LOPEZ: What's up, babe.

PD: How's the album coming?

JL: Everything's going well. It's had a lot of success, and that's been a pleasant surprise to me. Now I'm about to start a movie.

PD: What movie's that?

JL: It's called The Cell.

PD: What is it about and who's directing it?

JL: It's being directed by Tarsem. He was a video and commercial director who did R.E.M.'s 'Losing My religion' video. He won a bunch of awards for it.

PD: Is this his first movie?

JL: This is his first movie.

PD: So what made you take a chance with him?

JL: I just go with my gut. The movie's a psychological thriller, and the visuals are really important. So when I saw his reel, I thought he would be really perfect.

PD: As an actress, how do you choose your roles?

JL: You know, I choose them just like everything else--whatever moves me. Usually I know a script's right if it gets me a little scared and a little excited at the same time.

PD: This movie got you scared and excited?

JL: Yeah. I just felt like it was something that would stretch me and challenge me as an actress. And at the same time, it's a little bit unsettling to go to those places in your mind.

PD: Have you noticed any differences going from a movie star to a pop music star?

JL: I think the difference is that when you're a movie star, you're 30 feet big. People have to go out of their house to see you, and when they see you in person it's like 'Oh, my God!' but they're not so quick to approach you. But then, when you sing and do music, you're right there with them in their house, in their bathroom, in their bedroom. It's very personal for them. So when they see you, they're still like 'Oh, my God!' But they want to hug you and be next to you. It's just a different kind of energy.

PD: So, you've got hit movies. You got a hit album. And soon, it's gonna be a multi-platinum album. Are you happy right now?

JL: Yeah, I?m very happy.

PD: Is their a special person in your life?

JL: Yeah.

PD: Can we know his name?

JL: No.

PD: It's a secret?

JL: Yeah, my secret. My special little thing.

PD: Okay. Well, since we're on the subject of men, what is Jennifer Lopez's ideal man?

JL: What usually attracts me to someone is how I feel around him--if he can make me smile and laugh and feel at ease. But I think the first thing that gets me is someone who has a sense of confidence about him, but you can still tell that inside he's a good person. It's like a tough exterior, but inside he's real sweet. My ideal man would have to be honest. You know, honest and truthful. That's it. And sexy. Sexy's good, too.

PD: What's sexy to you?

JL: What's sexy to me? I don't know. It could be the way somebody moves. The way they carry themselves. That's usually what's sexy in a man to me. It's not so much that he has the perfect body or a great face. I'm not attracted to that type of look--the perfect look. I'm more attracted to the energy, like if he has a sense of confidence about him. And power. That turns me on.

PD: What turns you off about a man?

JL: I guess somebody who thinks that he's the man. That's just not cute to me. Like when a man approaches you and he talks to you all crazy, like 'Yo, what?s up!' You can?t get nowhere like that with me. A man has to have confidence, but it's gotta be a quiet confidence. Not in your face. I like sincere people.

PD: What type of things do you like to do with someone who you're in a relationship with?

JL: I like to do simple things. I like to stay at home and spend the whole day in bed on the weekends. Go out later in the evening.

PD: Is sex an important part of a relationship to you?

JL: Yeah, chemistry's very important. Sex is important. Absolutely.

PD: I'm not trying to be vulgar or anything, but what kind of sex do you like?

JL: Very few people in the world will ever know that.

PD: Good answer. I feel that. Do you believe in love at first sight?

JL: Yeah. Absolutely.

PD: Have you ever seen somebody and fallen in love with him at first sight?

JL: Yeah, I have.

PD: Can we know who?

JL: No.

PD: Do I know who?

JL: I don't know.

JL: I've been told I'm a good kisser.

JL: People I kiss.

PD: Do you kiss a lot of people?

JL: No.

PD: Could you ever see yourself giving me a kiss?

PD: I'm saying. We've been friends for a long time. We've been linked together in the papers and in magazines. I can't front. It's crossed my mind. What if everything they were saying was true? So, I'm just wondering have you ever thought about giving me a kiss?

JL: [Long pause] Um, yeah.

PD: Okay, back to the interview now. Let me see. I don't know--it's hard for me to concentrate right now, you know, now that Jennifer Lopez says she's thought about giving me a kiss.

JL: [Long pause] You're crazy.

PD: So the next time I see you can I have a kiss? I'm dead ass serious.

JL: Let's move on!

PD: You're not gonna answer that one?

JL: [Laughs] No.

PD: I mean they're writing about us in the papers. We might as well have a kiss.

JL: I don't kiss anybody I'm not serious with.

PD: But the next time you're in New York, can I have a taste test?

JL: No.

PD: We would have to get serious?

JL: Yup.

PD: Do you want to get serious with me?

JL: You're crazy.

PD: Airight. What was your most romantic moment?

JL: One time I was with someone and he gave me a gift. But, it wasn't that he just gave me a gift, it was when he gave it to me.

PD: When did he give it to you?

JL: It was a private moment.

PD: Oh, so the person gave you the gift, while y'all were makin' love.

JL: [Laughs] I didn't say that.

PD: Okay. Okay. Who's the sexiest man alive?

JL: Oh, that's tough. There's a lot of sexy men out there. Who's the sexiest woman alive?

PD: You're the sexiest woman alive.

JL: [Laughs] See, you're one of those guys.

PD: I'm one of those guys what?

JL: You got all the lines. You got all the answers.

PD: Who's the sexiest woman alive beside yourself?

JL: I saw Sophia Loren at the Oscars and she was so classy and sexy that she just blew me away. She?s older now but she's really maintained herself. And the way she carries herself is so admirable. Confidence is sexy in a woman, too. In this business it's always hard, because there's always that next fly, young thing coming up.

PD: How has your love life changed since you've become famous?

JL: It's changed a little bit. You have to protect yourself more, and be private, because so many people want to know about it. You've gotta keep sacred some things that are not to be shared with the world.

PD: How old were you when you lost your virginity?

JL: Read Details magazine.

PD: Fuck Details. How old were you when you lost your virginity? This is Notorious, we want to know.

JL: I was 17.

PD: That's a good age.

JL: It was fine for me.

PD: Where do you feel the most comfortable, in the Bronx, Manhattan, L.A. or Miami?

JL: I feel most comfortable in the Bronx. But I like being in Miami.

PD: Have you ever been a victim of racism?

JL: Growing up in New York, I didn't really experience it that much, to tell you the truth. It's been good like that. The only times were when I was working in Miami, before I started acting and stuff, and I'd go into certain shops where people would look at you like you didn't belong in there. Those were the only times that I ever experienced it. I never had any really bad incidents that I can remember.

PD: Have you ever found yourself stereotyped in Hollywood?

JL: People try to pigeonhole you. But I've always been very conscious of that when making choices. Even when I did television, I chose different types of roles, so they wouldn't be able to sterotype me. I realized that I had to fight that because I'm Latin.

PD: What's your social world like in Hollywood?

JL: I'll go to a premiere if it's my movie or if a friend's in it. I don't hang out with other celebrities and go to parties like that. That's not really my style. It's never been. Maybe it's because I just don't have time. When I do have time off, I'd just rather be at home or hanging out with the people I love and people who have been my friends for a long time. I have my little group of girls, they just don't happen to be actresses.

PD: You've changed physically from Fly Girl to now, how have you changed inside?

JL: I don't feel I have changed inside. I feel like I'm the same person who grew up in the Bronx. And who had the same kind of dreams that I had back then. Im still driven in that way and have things that I want to accomplish. But I don't feel like I've changed. I don't take anything for granted. I realize that this could all go away tomorrow.

PD: What if it did all go away tomorrow? What would you do?

JL: If it did, I would probably just keep trying. That's my attitude. It's not like I would just take it lying down. I'd keep on plugging away at it and struggling to do the things I want to do.

PD: A lot of the magazine articles that have been written about you paint you as very ambitious. Do you think ambition can be a bad thing?

JL: No, I don't think ambition is a bad thing. But I think sometimes people try to make it sound like it's unattractive to be ambitious and be a woman. But, for me, it's like I had a lot of dreams that I wanted to fulfill, and things that I wanted to go after. And just because I do that, and I have tunnel vision when I'm doing it, it doesn't mean that I'm a bad person. If a guy does that, it's like, 'he's great, he's focused.' But when it's a woman, it's a different story. And I just think that's unfair.

PD: Do you think that your ambition has been intimidating to men?

JL: I don't know. I guess what I do for a living could be intimidating to men. But I don?t see it as a bad thing. I see it as passion for what I do.

PD: Describe a vulnerable side of yourself that you don't think anyone would ever imagine or believe.

JL: I'm very sensitive to other people's feelings. It really bothers me to see anybody freaking out. People might be surprised at that, but it's very true.

PD: What's something about you that's less than angelic?

JL: I don't let people push me around. I don't let people take advantage of me or think that because of who I am or where I'm from that I'm not as intelligent as other people, or that because I'm a woman they can take advantage of me. I can be a little bit strong sometimes.

PD: What's in the future for Jennifer Lopez? Where do you see yourself in ten years?

JL: Making movies and doing my music and having a family.

PD: You're ready to have kids?

JL: Yeah.

PD: This guy that you mentioned earlier who you're with right now.. .do you think he's the guy you want to have kids with?

JL: [Pause] Yeah.

PD: Are you ready to get married again?

JL: Um, I don't know if I want to get married right away, but...

PD: Soon? Eventually?

JL: Absolutely. I would get married before I had kids.

PD: The guy that you're with right now, do you think you could ever marry him?

JL: If things worked out good, yeah.

PD: We gotta find out who this guy is....What about your last marriage. What did you learn from getting married and then divorced so soon afterwards?

JL: That love isn't everything, It takes compromise and honesty and trust. Those are the most important things. If you don't have them, you don't have a relationship.

PD: Name three things a guy could do to win you over?

JL: Um, that's a tough question, because there isn't a thing that someone can do to win your heart. It takes time.

PD: So, time could be one of them. What's another thing?

JL: It's a tough one to answer. What three things could a woman do to win you over?

PD: She could make me feel like she loves me for me. You know when you can tell just by the way someone looks at you that they love you. It ain't about if you got a hit record, or if you're right or wrong, or whatever, it's just, that they love you. You really only meet one person like that in your life who just... really loves you. You know what I'm saying? Another thing is that a woman could catch me off guard by doing something romantic. Usually it's the guy's job to do the romantic thing. And number three is by giving me a challenge, not making it where it's that easy for me.

JL: Where it's easy?

PD: Yeah, make it where I gotta wait a minute.

JL: So, you don't like to hit it on the first night?

PD: Nah, I don't like it when I get to hit it on the first night.

JL: But you will hit it on the first night.

PD: I have hit it on the first night. Have you ever hit it on the first night?

JL: No.

PD: You never had a one night stand?

JL: No. But you?re a guy so it's different, I guess.

PD: Do you find me attractive?

JL: What? Yeah, you're very attractive.

PD: No, are you attracted to me though? You might find Kevin Costner attractive, but you might never fuck with him, Do you find me attractive?

JL: I said yes. How much more plain can I be?

PD: Airight. You know, you're very difficult.

JL: [Laughs] Yeah, I know I'm a tough interview.

PD: Yeah, you're a tough inteview. I just want to say, you have a beautiful ass.

JL: [Laughs] You're an idiot.

PD: I know you hate when people bring that up, but for real, you do have a beautiful ass.

JL: How would you know?

PD: I mean I've looked at it like every other man in America has looked at it. It's really not that big though. You know what I'm saying. It just fits your body perfectly. It's the perfect ass.

JL: Thank you.

PD: Oh, you're welcome... Handcuffs or whipped cream?

JL: It depends on what kind of mood I'm in.

PD: Missionary or doggy style?

JL: None of your business.

PD: Rough or passionate?

Sean Combs is ready to move on if the world will let him.

Earlier this month, a jury acquitted Combs on the bribery and gun possession charges he faced in connection with a 1999 shooting in a New York nightclub, ending an endlessly publicized criminal trial.

In his first on-camera interview since the verdict, Combs told MTV News' Sway Calloway that he's more interested in discussing his future plans than in rehashing that seven-week trial.

He did, however, reveal his feelings about his former protégé, rapper Jamal "Shyne" Barrow, who was convicted of assault, reckless endangerment and gun possession in connection with the 1999 shootings.

He also explained why he no longer wants to be called Puff Daddy — or even Puffy — and why he plans to take an extended hiatus from his career. Check it out.

Sway Calloway: After a 14-month ordeal — 15 months, six-week trial — it's finally over. How do you feel?

Sean "Puffy" Combs: Man, I just feel blessed. [That's] the first word that comes to mind. I was in a situation where the only way I could come out of it was by putting my faith in God. No matter how good my lawyers were, no matter how much celebrity I had, everything was just stacked up against me. I was innocent, but all the things that were coming out was just ... it just felt like .... oh, man, my worst nightmare. All the things personally [that] I was going through at the same time. God just really blessed me and got me sitting here with you today. All the support from the fans, all the MTV viewers and the fans and just the people of New York, even all over the world, just all the prayers really helped me in a hard, trying situation. It's been like a year and a half, life being on hold, just waiting to get this over with.

I feel good. I'm glad the truth is out. I'm glad everyone knows I'm innocent, not guilty. But then also it's a bittersweet situation, because the situation took a lot out of people's lives, a lot of time out of people. A situation where you have Shyne, a young artist on the label, he's now incarcerated, and also a situation where I feel he didn't want to hurt anybody, try to hurt anybody whatsoever. Just not a good night, let's put it that way. Then you have people that are victims that are hurt. It's bittersweet, and then it's also to a point of being tired, being on MTV everyday, "The Puffy Trial," boom — like, you don't got a video, but you got the Puffy trial up there.

Sway: We have to tell the facts.

Combs: No, no, I understand that, but I'm just being honest with you. It's like some of the time, it gets to the point where I'm at right now. It just gets draining on a person being in the papers every day. So I was like, I'm gonna come back here. I want to talk to all the people, the fans. I want to let them know how much I appreciate all their support. How the situation has really been a life-changing experience. It's been a humbling experience, and I'm just blessed to be here.

Sway: Let me ask you this, because I'm looking at you physically, and it's obvious — it looks like you've lost some weight through this whole process.

Combs: Yeah, I lost some weight.

Sway: I can't even fathom what it would be like, sitting in that courtroom and waiting for the jury to announce the verdict, knowing that that verdict is the difference between years in prison and freedom. What went through your mind as you waited for the verdict?

Combs: As far as the stress level of everything, I always had a confidence [from] being innocent, or only accused of a crime. You have a deep confidence, 'cause you know you didn't do it. But then also it's the scariest thing, because you envision, like, well, what if something goes wrong? I'm gonna be doing some time for something that I didn't do. That's like the worst thing you can imagine, but you always go back to that point of the truth, and that kind of gives you peace, [and] of course just having faith, just releasing it to God and having faith. That stressed me out, but it had me feel scared emotionally — too scared — but then [I was] also at peace of knowing the truth. It's hard to explain. It's something I wouldn't wish [anyone] goes through and hopefully people, fans, young kids — even though I'm innocent, kids will know that. Don't get yourself in certain circumstances or instances, because it's not a good feeling to be sitting in that chair where you've got 12 people that are in control of your life. You have an opportunity to be in control of your life for yourself by the decisions that you make.

Sway: Did you feel that the media covered the trial fairly?

Combs: Oh yeah. I don't really think they covered what was going on in the courtroom, though. When you got the story the next day, a lot of the time it was sensationalized. And there was some journalist that did cover it well, but some of the more sensational newspapers sensationalized it, like there was something else that went on. They would just try to put all the bad stuff out there to try to make it look like it was the worst situation. But then you had a lot of journalists that did report it fairly and had journalistic integrity, and it was a situation that ... I just didn't think it was going to be that big. I just didn't think it was gonna be that big of a deal on an alleged gun possession.

Sway: You're household now, so that kinda comes with the territory.

Combs: I mean, I was bugging when I saw them stop CNN. They just stopped the regular scheduled program, and when I saw the tape two days later, I was like, this is really something. For them to stop CNN ... I was getting calls from Australia and Africa. But I'm glad it turned out right and I'm glad people aren't ... I'm glad the truth is out there.

Sway: This whole incident was like a soap opera — a drama, if you will — and it had its high and low points. What were some of the darkest, lowest points of this whole incident for you?

Combs: I would have to say around the holiday. Around the holidays, and the weeks after. It was a real dark time. There were some real dark times. There was time where I was losing a lot of weight, where I wasn't doing a lot of eating, it was just like straight-up, oh boy. I was really having to reevaluate why this was going on. I couldn't. I had to just look inside myself and do something. I was like, wow, this is real deep right here, and I don't want to go through this again. Whatever, whatever's going on, I just want to get through this and I don't ever want to feel this pain again.

Sway: And how did it affect you personally?

Combs: It affected me to a point where I've got to take a break, to be honest. I'm not even going to lie. Mentally there's so much between the trial and the case and the Jennifer [Lopez] stuff and the stuff with my kids and the business stuff and then the scrutiny of the media and being in the public eye, being in the papers everyday, being in the news everyday. It's a lot, so I just need to ... I'm gonna take what they call a leave of absence. A leave of absence, just to be Sean. To be Sean Combs for a couple of days and just evaluate everything that has happened. Just so I could learn from everything and make the right decisions going forward and I could figure out what I want to do in the future, as far as if I want to be a record chairman, if I want to be a movie star, if I wanna retire early and do whatever. That's not my train of thinking as far as retiring early, but it's just that [I need] time to figure out what level of position I want to play in the whole game of life, the whole world of entertainment.

Sway: In the closing argument, your attorney Benjamin Brafman suggested that the witnesses that testified against you might have been part of a conspiracy and that they actually got together to fabricate this whole story about you. Do you believe that to be true?

Combs: I mean, he has his beliefs. I think there were separate conspiracies, but on one common goal: to get some paper. But I just have an announcement to everybody — I don't have as much paper as you all are reading out there. I don't have like hundreds of millions of dollars in the bank and all that, so a lot of y'all are really wasting your time. But a lot of people have big dreams; a lot of people want to get rich and not work for it; and a lot of people also, at the same time, when they see an opportunity they try to grasp at it. It's like part of the American way, you know. If you trip on the sidewalk, you're supposed to lay down and hold your neck and say "I can't move" and yell "Ambulance." But I don't work too hard to let somebody come and lie, take my life away from me. It's like four different minds had four different plans with one common goal, and that was to get paid.

Sway: What is the status of the civil lawsuits at this point?

Combs: I don't know the exact status, but we're going to fight them. There's some new facts that I'm not guilty, so I don't know what substance those lawsuits have, but I'm sure people are going to try to get their hustle on regardless.

Sway: Are you worried about it at all?

Combs: Me fighting battles. That's been one of the problems. I'm used to it, and I don't want to fight anymore, so I'll let someone else deal with that. I think they'd be real disappointed to realize I don't really have a billion dollars. I just want everyone to know that, so don't fall and trip in front of me, man.

Sway: Let's talk about Shyne. Shyne, in effect, lived up to [his] lyrics ... by shooting a gun that night, and he is a Bad Boy artist. Do you feel that Bad Boy should have to accept responsibility for their artists?

Combs: [It's] impossible to control somebody's head, somebody's actions. The Bad Boy artists, many men and women, know that they have to be responsible for their actions. I have to be responsible for my actions. But defending Shyne, you know there are people at the club that said they saw somebody else with a gun. You know his defense was that he felt that his life was in danger and he was defending himself. I just know that he didn't mean to hurt nobody, because the proof shows it. His gun was fired in the air and he did not mean to hurt nobody. Hopefully through appeals it was a mistake that was made, and hopefully the judge will be lenient on him and everybody will learn from the mistake. I know he is sorry just like I am sorry that anybody got hurt, but Bad Boy Entertainment did not shoot anybody. I didn't shoot anybody.

Sway: Did it upset you when you found out that he actually fired a weapon?

Combs: I didn't know. ... I didn't want to address the judgment. Like everybody else, I didn't know all the facts because I didn't see it myself. I didn't know all the facts — I had just heard it. When speaking to him, I understand with the circumstances that [went] down, but I never got into all the exact facts. I understand that things happen and I know that he is not the type of person that [would want] to hurt [anybody]. He is young and talented. He is definitely somebody [whose] life shouldn't be wasted. That is not going to make life any better, being in jail a long time, so we are just praying. Bad Boy, we are going to help support his appeal and everything.

Sway: There was an interview published in a New York City newspaper [Village Voice] — I am sure you are aware of it. Shyne, in that interview, he claimed that the relationship was strained, where he thought you tried to distance yourself from him, and he felt that he was abandoned and that there was a possibility that his album would not be released.

Combs: Well, his album was released, and I don't abandon anybody, but to be honest with you, going through that time and that time period, going through a lot personally with the courts, I wouldn't abandon nobody. I would be lying if I said I was just talking to everybody. I was really [keeping] to myself during that time, and there were times that I was upset sitting at that table. I didn't blame him or nothing like that — I was not mad at him — but I was just ... really, it was a serious situation, and I was just looking at it from everybody's point of view.

Sway: Are you communicating with him?

Combs: I've talked to his lawyer, and I am going to see him in a week or so, because I have been talking to him through his lawyer. I speak to his lawyer like once a day; I don't speak to [Shyne]. I just got back into town, so I may speak to him this week on the phone. I am going out of town, but I will come back and see him.

Sway: Will Bad Boy be making any changes in the type of acts they sign?

Combs: Bad Boy will be versatile acts, but to be honest, I've got to not think about that for a while. To be totally real, I have to take a leave of absence for a couple of months, half a year, whatever it is, just to walk around, enjoy life, just be out of the public eye for a minute, just for a couple of months — whatever — just to take a little break. So I don't have the answers to that, 'cause I am not really thinking about making no records and making no money, I am not really into that right now. I am more thinking about getting myself right as a person, because if I am right, then everything that I produce and create is going to be even that much more better. This whole Puff Daddy thing has taken a toll on me.

Sway: I heard that you are going to get rid of the name?

Combs: Oh yeah. When I come back, I am definitely changing the name. No more Puff Daddy. I am not doing it as serious as Prince — I'm not gonna be just crazy with it — but I mean, we didn't beat the Puffy, Puff Daddy name up enough, so probably, like, the first week in June, we are going to have a name change ceremony. Clinton is probably going to change my name — Bill Clinton. I like his style; he's a survivor. They went at him; he's still standing. Probably have Elton John, he's still standing. They get it really, really spicy. It is going to be changed to straight P. Diddy. You could call me P. or Diddy, or P. Diddy.

Sway: Why are you doing that?

Combs: I just want something fresh, man. [If you see] "Puffy" in the paper, it has a lot of baggage with it. I just need a fresh start. It has a lot of different things, a lot of controversial issues with it. I just need a fresh start. Will you call me P., or will you call me P. Diddy?

P. Diddy Speaks On Verdict Part 2

In the second part of our post-trial interview with Sean Combs, he tells MTV News' Sway Calloway about his ex-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez, what happened the night of his arrest, how the trial affected his children and how his fans kept him going through the ordeal.

Sway Calloway: Did the effects of the Club New York shooting and the trial put a strain on you and Jennifer Lopez that ultimately led to your breakup?

Sean Combs: The only thing I'll say about Jennifer is she's somebody I'll always love, and that I'll always love her and we'll always be friends. I mean, we're regular people. I know a lot of people are like, "Jennifer Lopez and Puff Daddy!" But that's Jennifer, and I'm Sean, and we're regular people.

Sometimes realationships don't work out, but for me, she's somebody special and it's diffrent than [any] regular relationship that I've ever had. She's somebody I'll always love, and everybody else will just have to handle that. I'll always love her, you know? And i just want her to be happy.

When the time is right, we'll meet again. We'll meet again, and we're gonna talk about some things but, you know, it's been a real trying year. There's been a lot of heat and it's hard to really have what we going through [while] being so high profile and being so busy. It made things even harder. But you know everything's all good.

Sway: You had family members in the courtroom. I saw your mother there all the time. Russell Simmons, Heavy D, different celebrities ... did any thoughts of not being able to be with those people and your children again go through your mind?

Combs: Yeah, all that. This was one of the worst times of my life; straight up, one of the worst times of my life. I've had a couple of real bad times. There was just so much going on personally and also with the trial situation. It was just a lot. I know it was not something special. I know there are millions of people out there that can relate ... and to those people, just keep your faith in God. You can get through it.

But those things run through your mind. The trial was a big deal, especially in New York, and my kids knew the play-by-play. My kids were going to school and would call and be like, "Good luck today in court." And they would know what happened that day. They'd be like, "I heard someone got on the stand and lied, Daddy," and "What happens now?" "Did they have a verdict?" They became educated with the judicial system, being that it was in the papers every day, on MTV, on BET. You couldn't escape from it. So I had to deal with that with them and that, personally, was really heartrending.

Sway: One of the reasons it must have been frustrating, I would imagine, is that you had a gag order [placed on you], so you couldn't really respond to what was written in the press. A lot of the public didn't get a chance to hear your version of what happened that night, even when you testified. I happened to be in the courtroom [when you testified], but now that you can talk about things openly, walk us through what happened that night.

Combs: I still really can't give you an exact play-by-play, because of the different lawsuits that are out there, but I can give you an overview of it. Basically me and Jennifer, we were supposed to go to St. Bart's. We were supposed to go on vacation [there] the next day. We were gonna bring in New Year's there together, being that we were gettin' real busy. Then I get this bright idea [laughs] like, "Come on, baby, let's go dancin', let's go listen to some music, stay up all night, then we gonna go get on the plane the next day." The plane is on the runway.

Going to the club, we're having a good time. We leave the club, there's a commotion; next thing you hear, you hear some gunfire. We get pushed out of there. Next thing, they're pulling our car over. Next thing, we're in handcuffs. Next thing you know, [I'm saying] "What are y'all doing? Y'all know, you know I didn't have a gun, you know Jen didn't have a gun." You know, "What are we doing here? C'mon, can we talk about this?"

There was really no talking about it. There were news cameras outside, and it was on and poppin' from there. It was like [I was] guilty before [proven] innocent.

Sway: You had a lot of supporters outside the courthouse every single day. Tell me why are fans so important to P. Diddy and his career.

Combs: Fans made me. The fans gave me a chance, and they made me. Beyond that, my career has been trials and tribulations and ups and downs, so I have to have true fans riding with me. People [who] weather the storm, ride with me through the dark times and the sunlight times, the up times and down times — I appreciate them for that. When you are down on the ground and somebody is extending their hand to you, it just gives you hope. Usually when you are going through something real bad, ain't nobody there. I had fans there, and it made me feel so good.

There were fans that were outside [the courthouse] the whole time. When the verdict came down, it was just packed with press and fans, and they [kept] the fans real separate. They did not let them be close, because they did not know who was in the crowd, for security purposes. When I was leaving, I had to go and hug them all. I just saw it in their faces that they were happy; they were as happy as me. I saw men with tears in their eyes. I just wanted them to know that I am approachable. I ain't untouchable. I am blessed and fortunate, and I am grateful to be here. This is not [me saying] "I got over another one." This really shook me up. See, people that really cared, I just wanted to dive on them. I wanted to let them know that they are really appreciated.

Sway: What was the most memorable thing that a fan has done for you in your career?

Combs: I have been blessed with some of the best fans. I have had fans make me the big picture collages of the photo books; I have had fans send me birthday cakes [and] sing to me on my voicemail. I have had fans flash me. I have had older fans give me their bras and underwear onstage. I think the biggest thing is fans praying for me — sincere prayers during hard times. Beautiful letters of words of support. Fans making tapes of them doing songs, and fans crying. The most touching thing is fans crying. That really bugs me out. You'll be like, "Please, don't do that, it makes [me] feel so uncomfortable right now," but it just feels so good and makes you cry. I have had some of the greatest fans.

[Throwback] 112 - Play The Game MTV Interview

112 made a name for themselves as one of the first groups to emerge from Puff Daddy's Bad Boy roster, and with their third album, Part III, they've stepped out of their mentor's shadow.

Oh, they're still on Bad Boy, and Puffy shows up on the album. But the Atlanta vocal quartet — Mike (Michael Keith), Slim (Marvin Scandrick), Daron (Daron Jones) and Q (Quinnes Parker) — took more creative control than ever, writing and producing nine of the disc's tracks.

"Not trying to dis Bad Boy or Puffy or whatever, but ... a lot of music that came out on Bad Boy in '96, '97, it was 112 writing it," Mike said. "It's our time to shine now."

They also drew from their own experiences for many of the songs, including the R&B #1 "It's Over Now," in which a man comes home from the road and finds out his woman has been cheating on him. And they've long left behind the clean-cut image that helped romantic ballads like 1996's "Only You" and "Come See Me" find success on the pop and R&B charts.

This time out, they get nasty on "Peaches & Cream," and they face up to heartbreak on the R. Kelly-produced "Do What You Gotta Do." The group hopes their new direction will let them top even the platinum success of their first two albums.

112 recently sat down with Curtis Waller to talk about their emerging maturity, the meaning behind their songs and partying off the hook at Atlanta's Waffle House.

MTV: Tell me how you feel about the success of this latest album?

Daron: It has our first #1 ["It's Over Now"] and I'm happy.

Mike: Just goes to show you, man, that if you leave 112 alone...

Daron: It's one of the few records, or the first singles, that we dropped without a featured [singer], you know?

Q: Right, that's all of us.

Slim: It's just straight-up 112.

Daron: The music came from the group, written and produced by the group.

Mike: With the approval of Puff.

MTV: What's "It's Over Now" about?

Mike: It's about how, just being an entertainer, a lot of times you might be in a relationship where the woman has to be able to deal with the fact that you're going out of town and doing your thing. If she's not able to deal with that, a lot of times she tries to find what she's missing somewhere else. In this song, she does find it somewhere else, and you find the numbers in her pocket, and you just basically catch her doing wrong.

MTV: What about "Peaches & Cream"?

Mike: "Peaches & Cream" was really our [1998 hit] "Anywhere" times 10. We wanted a song that was kind of fun and at the same time giving a little sex appeal. We're older now, we can talk about subjects of this nature. "Peaches & Cream" talks about pleasing your woman and using your imagination. It's like that D'Angelo song "Brown Sugar," where he was talking about one thing but made you think he was talking about something else. It's pretty much a nasty song. Ain't no way it's an erotic song.

MTV: What's the third single going to be?

Mike: It's going to be "Player." We definitely knew that we needed a ballad for the third one, because, like Daron always says, what groups are most remembered by are those ballads. Like Boyz II Men, Jodeci, you remember the ballads; you don't remember the up-tempo songs, even though 112 has been fortunate enough to have successful up-tempo songs.

MTV: What's "Player" about?

Daron: It's just redefining what a player is. A lot of times, people think of a player as somebody that might have 50 girls, or 30 women or just juggling women. But to me and to 112, a player is someone who just plays the game correctly. I don't mean to say that life is a game, but it's like playing the game correctly. Being honest. It's about not having one woman and then having five girls on the side, but having six women and letting them all know that you're not ready to settle down, or you're not ready for a commitment. In my dealings with women, I can say that one thing that I have learned, growing up with two sisters in the house, is that women appreciate honesty more than anything — or more than a lot of things. That's really what the song is about: honesty.

MTV: How do you guys collaborate in your writing?

Slim: Sometimes I might come up with a song or a verse, and then I bring it to the rest of the guys and we all come up with the hook, and vice versa. Mike might come up with the whole song itself and he'll just figure out, or we'll all figure out who's gonna sing it, so it could be a lot of things. It's no set formula of how we do it. We just go with the flow.

MTV: What was the most difficult part of recording the album?

Slim: This album was so relaxed and so together as far as we were concerned. We were all on the same page as far as what we wanted to say to the world. We took time off, we moved down to Nashville for a little while and we just got it together and had a meeting of the minds.

Daron: It was one of the first times I felt like we had total creative freedom. There was nobody telling us, "No, you need to sing on this." It was just total freedom. We had a chance to grow and tune into who we are as a group.

Mike: It's us growing from little boys in the game, from 16- to 17-year-olds to young men in their 20s who have experienced what it is like to be successful and not successful in this business. Out of the 12 songs, we wrote and produced nine. For everyone out there that don't know, 112 are not just the singers or the artists, but we are taking it a step further. We are the writers and the producers.

And not trying to dis Bad Boy or Puffy or whatever, but we got to let people know, man, a lot of music that came out of Bad Boy in '96, '97, it was 112 writing it. But we always took the backseat to it because [of] the powers that be. It's our time to shine now.

MTV: Why did you name the album Part III?

Mike: Like a trilogy, like "Star Wars." It also signifies the unity between us and [how] we've grown now in this game. We understand what it takes to be successful. We were friends before, and it really doesn't matter about the money and all this other stuff. Just to let everybody know that 112 is together, 112 is tight.

MTV: What's the last song you recorded?

Mike: I think it's the interlude. No, intro to the out. We always try to keep [the Notorious] B.I.G. in our hearts, we try to keep B.I.G. alive as much as we can. The intro has "The weak or the strong, who got it going on, you're dead wrong." Just keeping the relationship between us and B.I.G. alive, because we always had him on the album[s], it don't make no sense to stop now.

Slim: He always showed us love on his album, too, like on his last album, a lot of songs referred to us.

Mike: And we were lame, man — don't nobody want to mess with us, we were these country bumpkins — but B.I.G. was the only one that stayed down with us. Showed us all the love, put our name on the mount, really. That phrase he came up with, that "Rule with the 112," man ... so many people came up to us and say that same thing: "That's what B.I.G. say." We know he's listening and nodding his head, because he loved to hear us sing like no other, and it was kind of funny, because he was this hardcore rapper, and we like to sing R&B. But he was like, "Yo, sing that one again, and this one again. Do the medley again." He had a special place in our hearts.

MTV: Any favorite tracks on the album?

Mike: One of my favorites is called "Don't Hate Me," which I like for two reasons. Number one is what we're singing about. It's a message within a message saying, "Don't be mad at me if a girl come home with me, because obviously you weren't doing something you were supposed to do at home." It's a warning to the brothers, saying that we are going to take [their ladies] when we come to your city. The second reason is how we are singing it. You won't expect it from 112. Like a lot of people didn't expect "It's Over Now" to be coming from 112. We are evolving now, we are ascending, going to a higher level. We hope we never reach our pinnacle. We just want to keep growing and growing.

Q: My favorite is "Peaches & Cream." It's erotic and sexy and I'm a freak, basically. I know a lot of guys out there that are really going to like that one, and it's for the girls too, so ha ha.

MTV: Would you talk about the video for "It's Over Now"?

Daron: We were really trying to establish that we are from Atlanta. One of the scenes we shot was in front of a Waffle House. If anyone knows anything about the South, they know that that's the after-hours spot — after the club, everybody goes to the Waffle House and get something to eat and it's always off the hook. We were excited that we got the chance to dance, so when people see the video, they know we are so excited. It's like we're a new 112.

MTV: What was it like working with Twista on "Don't Hate Me"?

Mike: We did our vocals in Atlanta, and he did his in New York, and we just heard it and we were like, "Yeah, that is hot." The thing with Puff is that we have to give thanks to him for allowing us to do that. He had enough confidence in us to go down to Atlanta and record an album and send it up to him. We had trust in [Twista]. It just came out hot.

MTV: Any talks of touring at this point?

Slim: We got a couple of tour options on the table, but I really don't want to speak about them, 'cause nothing is in stone right now. But we'll definitely go on somebody's tour this year. If not our own, then on tour with a host of other acts.

MTV: Can each one of you share one of your craziest experiences on the road?

Mike: Can't do it.

Daron: Whoa! Whoa!

Slim: [laughing] This is a family-oriented, PG show. But hey, it's been crazy, from people climbing on your cars to naked girls waiting in your room.

Mike: I never had a naked girl waiting in my room, so Slim, that's one up on me there. The craziest was our first show in Moline, Illinois, when we got locked in the bathroom for 45 minutes. We were on the Keith Sweat tour with Bone Thugs [-N-Harmony], Nas and Foxy Brown. We were supposed to perform that night, but the powers that be were like, "Y'all ain't performing tonight. We'll give y'all tickets to the show, and y'all perform tomorrow." We were like, "All right cool, no problem." Keep in mind that we had our performance outfits on, so we were all looking alike, and I guess that they didn't realize how strong [our 1996 hit] "Only You" was at the time. They were brushing us off, and they put us in the nosebleed section. We didn't get backstage or nothing. It was intermission and all the lights were on, and some little girl screamed, "That's 112!" They started chasing after us, and we ran into the men's room. We had to stay there for 45 minutes. We know never to do that again.

Having survived the sophomore jinx to make it to album number three, 112 are proud that they've earned their stripes the hard way--by writing and producing themselves.

Sean "P Diddy" Combs sure knows how to pick 'em. After that fateful night in 1995 singing for PD in front of Atlanta, Georgia's hottest club, Club 112, the lives of Mike, Q, Slim, and Daron have been changed forever. Their 1996 debut release on Bad Boy Records, 112, set the bar for the following releases: 1998's Room 112 and this year's Part III, which spawned the #1 single, "It's Over Now." Every time out, 112 has met the challenge most R&B groups fail to conquer--keeping the audience's attention. With increasing input on writing and production duties on each project, 112 is poised to make a serious run for the title of best R&B male group for all the right reasons, which doesn't include working for P Diddy.

P4M: Ya'll comfortable with the title of the album, Part III, after asking fans for a name?

Mike: Yeah, that Part III says a lot. It's not many groups that can say that they still have anticipation and energy behind their third album. People can come out with a third album but, by that time so many people are tired of them, it's ridiculous. 112 is one of those groups that can honestly say we are looking forward to the fourth album now. We been in the game five years and ain't going nowhere.

Slim: Not only going into the third album, but going into the consistency and being successful. [I can see] if we were going in on a decline and uncertain about the future, but we've been blessed to be successful all the way around. Still got passion for the music and we still love each other.

P4M: Viewing the credits, 112 has been taking control of the music. How do ya'll feel about this album as a group?

Mike: We definitely feel as though this is our breakthrough album. After the third album, people gonna say, "This is what 112 is." First album, they are trying to get into you. Second album, they trying to see whether or not you are going to maintain. Then the third one solidifies who we are. And we want to make sure you know us and get to enjoy us as artists. The feedback that we are getting for this album is phenomenal. Like how we used to look at other artists like Boys II Men and New Edition, that's what I think about this group now. I always knew the potential but now it's manifesting. "It's Over Now," is our first #1 single.

P4M: Were Puffy or Bad Boy A&R Harve Pierre big influences on this album?

Mike: Nah, not really. We went to Nashville, Tennessee for the first leg of production on this album. Just to get away from the record label. Nashville wasn't that far from Atlanta so you can drive home if needed, but we didn't want to be in Atlanta or New York because of the type of vibe we had on the second album. The second album did have a lot of organization, we did a lot of the songs on tour, then when we finally came to NY to live, there was all kind of mania going on. Puff was feeling himself at the time with his record being out, he really didn't want to compromise with nothing that we had to say. So there was a lot of back and forth going on. We not going through that again. If you don't like it, fine, but this is us.

P4M: How do ya'll deal with the confrontations with Bad Boy?

Mike: It's still going on to this day. But how we solved that problem is, basically, if you gon' shut somebody up, shut them up all the way. Don't leave a crack for them to be able to say [anything]. We didn't come to them with demo songs. We came and each one of the songs were done how we wanted. It was either you liked the song or you didn't. It just so happened that every song that we brought, they loved.

Q: Also, through the years we learned to combat Puff with statistics and facts. In the beginning he probably wasn't as confident in us cus we were new artists. So he had to be in the studio with us everyday. Just knowing that all the singles that have been released by 112 have been produced or written or produced and written by 112. From "Only You" and "Cupid" to "Love Me" and "It's Over Now," all except for "Your Letter."

P4M: On this album it seems as though there is no clear-cut lead singer, how did ya'll fight that out?

Mike: The thing that we had above every other group is that we all can sing lead. We would always do shows and prove that, but it was never solidified on records. A lot of the singles had Slim on it or Slim and Q, not really taking advantage of the whole group. Now it makes sense cus you don't want to pull all your guns out at once. It's a growth process. We constantly growing and our arsenal is getting bigger. Puff is a fan of 112 but he is a real fan of Slim's voice.

Slim: I'mma tell you this is a personal statement. I'm so glad it's like this, man, cus this is the advantage of being in an all-star group. I don't have to feel like I'm pressured. If I'm sick, then the song can't go on? That's crazy. The fans don't want to hear that. We got four lead singers and we've had that since the first album. I love it.

Q: It also gives the group more staying power. When you think about an individual artist, it's only a certain amount of time people will get tired of you. We got four solo artists, with the life expectancy of four solo artists in one group. We opened up but we ain't done. For the first time with our expanded fan base, I can say our record label is a fan of 112.

P4M: What was it like working on "Do What You Gotta Do," with R Kelly who wrote and produced the song?

Mike: Not what we expected. Number one is time. How he records his records. We're used to recording in the afternoon, like 12 noon. So when they said, "You gonna work with him at 12," I said cool. We get there at 12 noon. Later we find out it's at 12 midnight. I don't know why, maybe that's the time for his voice. For some of us it is too, but we don't function as well together as a group around that time.

Q: It took some time to get used to. From 12 midnight to 5 a.m. we managed it. He brought another dimension to us. Out of the fifteen songs we had, we did eleven. People were submitting tracks and wanted us to write to them. We were like, "No." We wanted to have the whole package ready for a new feel. That's how we got R Kelly. Tim & Bob and that's it.

P4M: On another note, which year was the best Atlanta Freak-Nik?

112: [All pop up] The early '90s!

Slim: Ahh man...'92, '93. We was young. To go from one block to the next was like four hours. You don't understand it, but it happened.

Mike: They started tripping around '94.

Daron: That's when Freak-Nik was off-da-chain.

Q: Once you get into the late '90s, you get the mayor and the police involved. At Freak-Nik you didn't really have to go to the club to feel it.

Slim: It was really outside. We shut the freeway down. Get out the car and start videotaping, walking.

P4M: Ya'll still got the videotapes?

Q: Do we?

Mike: We got this dude smoking some weed, and he passed it to the police dude and he just smoked it.

P4M: Which sorority has the gangsta girls?

Slim: Them AKAs were off the chain! You'd be in the AU center, boy, and them red, longhaired...[laughs!] They were the only ones that were really friendly toward the camera. We seen some performances all right.

After the infamous '99 nightclub shooting for which Shyne was convicted of aggravated assault, P.Diddy searched for a new act with "no jail, no guns, no drama." He basically wanted some good boys for Bad Boy. Enter the Hoddfellas. At Puff's Hamptons Bash last year, the group's manager Marma Lil' slipped Puff a tape of Morock, Poppa Sim, Freddy Blassy and Verse- four schoolboys with clean records and clean lungs ( they dont even smoke)- spitting their self-titled anthem "Hoodfellas". Puff heard a commercial bonanza. After all, the boys have rap covered: Morock got the streets, Verse's got the freestyle fanatics, Blassy has the ladies and Sim is self describe universal.

Ranging from age 17 to 22, the quadruplet call themselvers social advisors to the 31 year old Puffy. "He couldn't go to the streets so he came to the hood." Blassy announces. The hoodfellas keep the CEO in touch with the hood by doing everything from picking out clothes to introducing him to new dances ( like the "shoulder shake" Puff unveiled in G-dep's Let's get it video) to writing his rhymes. Though Morock, the eldest Hoodfella and designated ghostwriter, won't specify what records he's written, he will admit Puff's a demanding perfectionist who's "been rhyming better than ever".

You can hear the men behind Puff's music on the upcoming Badboy Compilation, The Saga Continues...Carl thomas's "emotional"remix and the Hoodfellas debut, which will be released this fall on Big thingz, the label run by Hitmen Yogi (Morock and Blassy's cousin) and distributed by Badboy.

Inside the Village's Time Cafe, the Hoodfellas are refreshingly playful and polite; a far cry rom rap's typical ice-grills thugs. Morock, Blassy and SIm grew up together in Bed Stuy, but they kid fraternally with the quiet, flute and piano playing Verse who Marma Lil' recruited from Harlem for his infallible freestyle skills(which he demonstrated at the table, rhyming about dinner.) The Hoodfellas have their own lingo, in which good sis "hood" and profanity is rare. Though he acknowledges they're not choir boys,Sim says, " We know if we in jail we can't get money- that's motivation for us." and that's all Hood.

Group angry the rap mogul has taken so long to release its debut album.

NEW YORK — "[There's no] civil war going on at Bad Boy," the label's head honcho, P. Diddy, said Thursday about the rumored dissension in his company's ranks. "Bad Boy's stronger and tighter than ever."

Contrary to his assessment, if you listen to Brooklyn-based Bad Boy signees the Hoodfellaz, they'll expound on their displeasure with P.D. and the beef sounds familiar. Mirroring the turmoil P. Diddy went through with the LOX in 1998, now it's the Hoodfellaz who have gone public about their desire to jump ship.

"A lot of tension is building," the Hoodfellaz's oldest member, 21-year-old Don Morock, said last week about bumping heads with Diddy. "I just think it's time to part ways. We're hurt. We wanted to rock with him ... we thought he wanted to rock with us. Now this is how we're showing our anger."

The Hoodfellaz's biggest gripe is that they've been sitting in the wings since they signed with Bad Boy in 2001, shortly before Diddy's third album, The Saga Continues, was released. The trio, which also consists of Blassy and Poppa Sim, said it has recorded a whole catalog worth of tracks over the past couple of years and that Diddy has broken promises to officially release a single by them.

He's talking about how he's running [the New York Marathon] 'for the kids,' " 18-year-old Blassy scoffed. "I got a kid, Morock got a kid, what about our kids?"

"On the real, we ain't eating over there," 19-year-old Sim seethed. "They're not paying bills over there. We with the richest man in hip-hop and we gotta do our own thing to get paper."

The main point the Fellaz want to communicate to their boss is that their music is a 'sure thing' if they receive the proper backing.

Diddy disagrees. "The Hoodfellaz — they're like a young group that needed a lot of work so they didn't come out," Puff said bluntly, explaining why it has taken so long for the group to drop a record.

Upset about not being invited to tour with Diddy or be in the video for "Bad Boy 4 Life" (Morock wrote Puff's verse), the Hoodfellaz's ire was further raised when they heard that Da Band would be putting out an album before them (see "Bad Boy's Da Band Await Judgment, Embrace The Cheesecake"), as well as a host of other acts like Black Rob, Mark Curry and Loon, who had been patiently waiting to blow.

"In six months you made [Da Band's album happen], which makes it seem to me that you are fully capable of [putting out other albums]," Sim hissed.

"You got people who would love to be in the studio and they get a chance to be in the studio and they're fighting," Morock chimed in. "We found that disrespectful."

The Hoodfellaz, who ironically performed the theme song for the first season of MTV's "Making the Band," decided to lash out at Diddy's TV troupe, putting out a mixtape called Taking Da Band, which features a bevy of disses levied at the group in interludes and the now infamous title track. They leaked the joke-laced Taking Da Band just a few days before Da Band's LP, Too Hot for TV, hit shelves on September 30, creating a hailstorm of controversy on the radio.

"They can't touch us, bottom line. They know it, Puff knows it, or else they would respond," Morock said.

The Hoods gave Diddy two weeks notice that they were putting out the record, hoping that P.D. would "make things right" by then.

"At the time, what would have made it right was to recognize what he's got and do something with it or let us go," Poppa Sim said. "You did nothing for us. Nothing. Just let us go."

"I said that it wasn't really the right move," Diddy remarked in regards to receiving advance notice from the band about the record. "At Bad Boy, we don't go against the grain of each other. We move in silence, we don't make dis records. That was a mistake that they made. They're young and as the father of Bad Boy, I will handle everything with them. They'll learn from this mistake."

In addition to going after their labelmates, Diddy said the Hoods' other mistake was not making their dis record scathing enough.

"The record wasn't that hot ... anyway," Diddy said. "If you're gonna put out a dis record, you better make somebody go to church. Get them meditating and praying for forgiveness if you gonna make a dis record. When you do something on Bad Boy, do it all the way or don't do it at all."

Perhaps the members will still get a chance to unleash their venom. The Hoods have a new mixtape dropping in December and they haven't ruled out further attacks, but say they want to play it smart while still signed to Bad Boy.

"I haven't really decided it yet," Diddy said referring to how he plans to settle his family business. "I just [want to] make sure that Da Band stays focused on what they have to do. And then when I have time after the marathon, I'll sit down and I'll talk to [the Hoodfellaz]. And I'll handle it like the way we handle family problems — handle it in a positive way and move on."

The formula for Sean "P. Diddy" Combs' success as a "solo" artist is simple: value your family. Although he had outside help from friends such as Ginuwine, Twista and Foxy Brown on his solo debut, 1997's No Way Out, it was then-Bad Boys Mase, Notorious B.I.G. and the LOX who dominated the album's tracks.

Like a movie director making a cameo in his own film, Combs was more of an organizer, giving his young protégés a chance to get their shine on while he dropped a verse or two on each track.

After being acquitted on charges of bribery and gun possession in a closely watched trial earlier this year, P. Diddy is reborn on his just- released third album, P. Diddy & the Bad Boy Family — The Saga Continues ... On it, P.D. flaunts his rebuilt roster of hungry young rhyme gladiators and hints that his struggles have made him a different man. Although it's going be difficult to duplicate Bad Boy's incredible 1994-97 run of hits, P.D.'s latest single, "Bad Boy for Life," proclaims he's up to the challenge. As he told MTV News' Sway, he's rested, rejuvenated and ready to retake his throne. Just don't expect him to be rocking that shiny suit again.

Sway: Last time we talked it was right after the trial, and you told me you were going to some time off, maybe six months. You were going to see the world, find yourself, then come back. What happened?

P. Diddy: It happened, [but] in a shorter time. I've never really taken more than four days off, so it was a lot for me to go away for three and a half months. I went all over Europe. I walked on a whole bunch of beaches and I did a lot of thinking. I spent a lot of time in Miami. [A] couple of illegal lane changes here and there. [Laughs] At night I would get a little bored. I'm hyperactive, and I went in the studio and I would just start making records, for no reason. I haven't had the chance to make music for a year and a half.

A couple people started knocking on my door ... all the artists [on my label] I was neglecting my whole trial period. Hanging out turned into us making records together. Then we got 10 songs ... and we was like, "Hold up, we got a little album here." We were going to put out a compilation album, [with] individual cuts from each artist. But after I had this album finished, I said, "I'm going to keep "Let's Get it" and the Faith [Evans]/Carl [Thomas] joint ["Can't Believe"]. ... And I'm gonna put those two on the album with these cuts that I did. I'm just gonna throw out something for the summer".

Sway: What is the theme of the album?

P. Diddy: If you're looking for a deep album or you're looking for me to talk about past situations, it's not even about that. It's just 14 hot records that are gonna make you dance. Everybody's just been spilling their guts all over records and talking about how hard it is to be an entertainer and how much we get hated on and what we have to go through. But I ain't really got it that bad. I'm just happy to be here.

Sway: On your new single, "Bad Boy for Life," you make reference to how influential Bad Boy has been in hip-hop. How do you think Bad Boy has influenced the music industry?

P. Diddy: You go into any club in the U.S. and you're gonna hear at least 30% of music with some Bad Boy involvement. We are proud to be the team [that] weathered the storm. [We were] hated on, then loved, then hated on. But we are still here. You can always guarantee on us to hit you with a hot record.

Sway: I know on the album you made comments to people who called you the "Shiny Suit Guy."

P. Diddy: You all remember when Bad Boy put on a big tour [in 1997] and me and Mase had on the silver shiny suits? Then, six months later, [I would see] friends of mine, friends [in] the industry on MTV. They would be like, "We ain't no shiny suit rappers." But they never said, "Yo, Puff with the shiny suit." They never said my name. I was the one they were talking about. So I made a little interlude [on the album] about it. I just confessed that I was Shiny Suit Man, and it was all in fun. There wasn't any anger involved.

Sway: Are you still going to come out in shiny suits?

P. Diddy: No, no, no.

Sway: Your whole style seems to have changed.

P. Diddy: The shiny suit was just a costume. I don't want to go see nobody just standing there in a T-shirt, not moving on stage. When you go see a lot of hip-hop shows, a lot of times people don't put costumes into the show. We would do six costume changes, because we are there to entertain. [If] somebody [is] paying $40 for a ticket, you better put on a shiny suit or something. Forty dollars and a white T-shirt? Come on, man! But the shiny suit is retired.

Sway: Is it in the closet somewhere?

P. Diddy: It's in the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame, and there is one in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It's retired and that's why we can make fun of it. It's [like] when you make fun of somebody for wearing bell-bottoms. It was cool at that time, and [when] we put it on people liked it. Then a year later, it was played out.

Sway: The New York Daily News recently did an article based on a TALK magazine piece that alleges that you are withholding information about Biggie's murder as well as information on other murders. How do you respond to that?

P. Diddy: First of all, it hurts. It hurts me to my heart that somebody could say something as ridiculous as that. I would never withhold information about the murder of my man Biggie, or anybody else. It's just silly and ridiculous. The accusations are just flying out. All I've been trying to do all my life is to make great music. I'm in the studio 24 hours a day. It's true that once you get a certain level of success, you become a target. TALK magazine should be ashamed of themselves. We're working on a lawsuit with them right now because it has to stop.

Sway: Russell Simmons' recent hip-hop summit had a theme of hip-hop artists taking more responsibility for their actions and lyrics. Do you feel the summit has affected your music?

P. Diddy: I was already on that plane, because me and Russell were having discussions. This is my 10-year anniversary producing, making music, and ... you're not what you were 10 years ago. It's just a natural evolution and having wisdom. I think that's what the conference was about, sharing our experiences and what we learn[ed] from all the things we went through. On the new album, I didn't plan it that way, but I probably said one curse word. It just was a frame of mind, the place I'm in. I just want to put positive energy out there. I'm not saying a curse word is putting out negative energy, but it depends what mood you're in. If you're in an angry mood, that's the kind of music you're going to make. But ... I just wanted to make people dance.

Sway: Will that affect the kinds of artists you sign to Bad Boy?

P. Diddy: Yeah. I'm not going to sign cats just trying to compete with Jay-Z, or [artists] trying to live Nas' life. I am not going to sign a 15-year-old kid from the suburbs talking about what Jay-Z is talking about. If there's a kid from Harlem that's going through and seeing all this stuff, I'm gonna definitely let him report what he is seeing. If it's hard, if it's soft, whatever.

Sway: Tell me about the gospel album you're working on.

P. Diddy: [It] comes out in November. I don't want people to get scared when they hear about gospel. It's really an inspirational album. It's not about religion, it's just [about] spirituality and being positive and giving thanks. It's important for us as artists to let kids know that, yeah, you can listen to Biggie and Tupac, but you always have to remember who has to come first in your life, and that's God.

All the money goes to an AIDS in Africa [charity] organization. There's a huge AIDS epidemic in Africa, and [one of] Bad Boys' [plans] this year is to give more awareness to that. We're gonna be doing a big charity concert helping to save some of the brothers and sisters in Africa. We have Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary, Faith, 112, Joe, Brandy and Brian McKnight [on the album]. I rap on one song with Fred Hammond, who's a gospel legend. I produced the album.

Sway: Do you feel a certain amount of pressure putting out an album about God? When you go back out on the streets, do you feel you have to watch how you act and what you say now?

P. Diddy: I think that's good that I have to watch how I act and what I say. I think that's a part of growing up.

Sway: Former Bad Boy artist Mase is now a minister. Did you ever consider putting him on the album?

P. Diddy: He doesn't want to perform anymore. It was something that we considered, but we hadn't worked [with] him on this even when he was signed to the label. We had a song [that featured] him called "I Love Him." But we took him off because he said he didn't want to be a musical performer, whether it was gospel or hip-hop.

Sway: Rumor has it Mase is writing a tell-all book about his experiences with Bad Boy. What do you think about that?

P. Diddy: I think it can be nothing but positive. I feel he would tell the truth. I don't feel he would sensationalize anything. We don't have nothing to hide. If he wants to write a book, we fully support him.

Sway: You formed the Three The ... clique with G-Dep and Black Rob. What's up with that project?

P. Diddy: We'll probably do something with that after G-Dep's album [and] after Black Rob's album sometime next year.

Sway: Talk about your role in the movie Made.

P. Diddy: Made is a movie with Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn ("Swingers"). When I decided I wanted to be an actor, I said I wanted to work with quality actors and directors. A lot of times you have those [elements] together on independent films. So I said I'm gonna start out making no money, changing my clothes in the middle of the street, no makeup artists, straight raw. They're [Favreau and Vaughn] two fish-out-of-water [guys] that come to New York trying to get their hustle on.

Sway: There are rumors that you're doing another movie with some big actors. You want to speak on that?

P. Diddy: I already did my second film. It's called "Monster's Ball." We've got Billy Bob Thornton, Heath Ledger and Halle Berry [in it].

P. Diddy: The underwear line is in your stores right now. We're doing an event to launch in August, but it's in the stores now. We're competing with Calvin Klein and it's a friendly war. I caught him at a party and told him that underwear wasn't sexy until he did it and we're about to bring the sex back to the underwear game.

P. Diddy: The only reason I wear underwear is because I have the line. (laughs)

P. Diddy: Rocawear won. They had their full staff, but we looked better. We had cheerleaders. We were extra sexy.

P. Diddy: Yeah. I think being famous is a good thing. You have to have balance though. You have to spend as much time with your family as with fame. You want to do the right thing and be respectful of the fame. As opposed to being flashy or gaudy. I employ 600 people and wouldn't be able to employ that many people or a lot of minorities without the fame. Fame is hard work.

P. Diddy: I actually put the album together quickly. After the trial, I had a lot of time on my hands. Then I was in Miami and was able to put the album together in four or five weeks.

Digital Dish Diva says: Did the trial change you?

P. Diddy: No, it didn't change me. It made me thankful for the things I had. I think I was always thankful, but it made me think how quickly things could be taken away from you. Even if you didn't do anything, just being in an environment.

Southern346 says: You seem more enlightened during your interviews, more calm and peaceful. Is this a direct result of recent events in your life or did you decide it was time for a change, prior to?

P. Diddy: I think seeing how my life has gone and my success, I'm in a more peaceful place. I am more focused than I've ever been and that's coming out, it may seem calm, but I'm just more focused. I have a movie coming out with Vince Vaughn and I'm working for the future of Bad Boy.

DevilSpawn says: P. Diddy, I just saw your movie "Made." I thought you were fantastic in it. Did you take any special acting lessons or are you just naturally talented?

P. Diddy: I'm just naturally talented. (laughs) Just kidding! I definitely took acting lessons, and I chose a film that was more an independent film. This is something I want to do seriously and want to take my time so I definitely had an acting coach.

A NEW interview with Mason Betha about his new life... Interview by S2sMagazine!

Mase is dead. Well…not literally. But the dimple faced young rapper who was introduced to fans by hip-hop mogul Puff Daddy in 1997 is no more. Nowadays, he is Mason Betha, pastor of "Saving a Nation Endangered" (S.A.N.E.) Ministries in Atlanta.

How did this all happen? Laid up in a swanky hotel room bed at Trumps Towers with one of his string of women, Mase woke up one morning and had an epiphany–a sudden perception into the spiritual meaning of reality. "This is not what I’m supposed to be doing with my life," he concluded.

Mase’s meteoric rise to superstardom began after meeting Puffy at a music convention. From the giddyup, the two became somewhat of a duo. They even wore identical outfits as they drove a crème colored Bentley Rolls Royce through the desert in the Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down video.

In 1997, Bad Boy released Mase’s solo album, Harlem World, containing the hit single, "What You Want." Fans saw the handsome thug caught in the midst of a tug of war with beautiful, young women. Mase was clean-cut and polished. Dressed in the finest gear, he was portrayed as a high-rolling, Cristal sipping, diamond-clad, platinum Rolex-wearing playa living on life’s top shelf. And when Mase smiled, oh how the ladies swooned!

By the end of 1999, Mase’s career, which had soared at jet speed, came to a screeching halt. Shortly after the release of his sophomore album, Double Up, Mase denounced his public persona. This would be his last album as a rapper. He was giving up show business and giving his life to Christ. The news sent shock waves throughout the hip-hop world. The album sold over four million copies.

By his own admission, Mase’s rampant partying, drinking and sexcapades had become too much for him. Mase the rap star was leading people to hell, he says. For that, Mase knew there would be hell to pay.

But isn’t the Lord Jesus Christ a savior? Yes, He is! He saved Mase and gave him a mission to preach a message of salvation. Now he is Mason Betha, the new Pastor of S.A.N.E. Ministries in Atlanta, Georgia. For the first time, hear his amazing story as only he can tell it.

Calvin: When you were younger, people would sometimes tell you in church that God has a great work for you. You said that scared you. Why?

Mason: When I was young I wasn’t aware of who God was or who the Lord was. When they used to tell me about how it would be, they would be telling me I would be a great man of God one day. I just wasn’t ready to accept all that.

Calvin: Did you grow up in the church?

Mason: No. I grew up hopping from church to church but not going to church. You know, going on Easter, Christmas, New Year’s, stuff like that…occasionally.

Calvin: How did you become Mase the rap star?

Mason: When I got about 15, I watched a whole bunch of my friends die. Then I went to Florida and I came back to New York. I was just rapping and trying to put all my life into music and trying to help people have fun because I seen so much wrong happen. Then I wound up meeting Puff Daddy and got into music and became a superstar overnight. For years I was sitting there wondering what was my purpose in life.

Calvin: Would you share the story of being in a hotel room with a young lady and you woke up, telling her that you felt differently about your life?

Mason: One day I just woke up and everything was so clear. It was like "this is not what you’re supposed to be doing." I was just laying in a hotel with a young lady and I just stopped. I just said, "We’re not supposed to be doing this." And she looked at me like I was crazy. So I went back and started dealing with this other girl in the same hotel. Then I just stopped again. One day I opened up a Bible and it was just speaking directly to me. I would try to show other people but they could not see it. I was just sitting there and I just knew it was something different that I’m supposed to be doing versus just waking up every day, smoking and drinking and doing music. I just knew it was something missing from my life that I was supposed to be doing and I couldn’t put my finger on it. But now I know. It was God’s way of showing me that "I’m speaking to you right now. If I can get you to change, I’ll make millions of people change through you because you’ve led millions of people to hell through doing the devil’s work. So now it’s time for you to lead those millions back to where they’re supposed to be."

Calvin: Where were you when this happened?

Mason: I was in the Trump Hotel in New York across from Central Park.

Calvin: I’ve heard the story of how you met Puffy at a music convention. After that meeting you shot to instant superstardom, didn’t you?

Mason: Yeah.

Calvin: Explain the difference between Mase and Pastor Mason Betha?

Mason: That was what I used to be. That’s why I say Mase and Mason Betha are two different things. Mase is what I used to be. Mason Betha is who I am now. So it’s just like everything you see on TV–that’s entertainment. What a person is doing for the Lord, this is a job you can’t fake. This is a lifestyle. This is not something you punch in at nine and you come out at five. If somebody sees you doing wrong at one o’clock in the morning, you’ve lost that job. So this is not the same versus entertainment. Entertainment you throw makeup on. You throw cameras on. You could make anybody look like something. This is not the same thing. A lot of people try to make this into an industry, but this is not the same thing. With the generation growing up today we can look at a person preaching and know if it’s real or not. You don’t need no special powers to know that.

Calvin: What are you telling people when you preach?

Mason: Hell is not full! There is [still] some room for some more people.

Calvin: I’ve heard you preach. You are not a fire and brimstone preacher. You don’t quote many Scriptures from the Bible. You simply speak from your heart. What you’ve said is raw. It’s real. It’s caused people to look at their lives and make life-changing decisions. That’s powerful. How would you describe your ministry?

Mason: I know I’m an example because I look at my life daily and I know I came a long way. And I know where God is taking me I probably got a long way to go. But while I’m going there, a lot of people gonna be won unto the Lord. I wouldn’t be surprised if millions of people are won to the Lord.

Calvin: How old are you?

Mason: Twenty-five.

Calvin: You told radio host Doug Banks that once you decided to give up rapping and give your life to Christ, your mother said she felt like she had gotten her son back.

Mason: Yeah, because it was a time when I was living that lifestyle and that lifestyle made me into Mase. That’s what the people fell in love with. They fell in love with the image that the money made. It’s almost like if you take a person right now singing for the Lord and you start giving them a whole bunch of money putting them on TV every day, they won’t be that same person that was all humble and nice and caring and sharing because now they’ve been given an image. And now they got to live out that image. Every person you come across every day is probably living an image. And the one’s not living an image know who they are. The one’s caught in an image, they will realize later who they are or who they need to be. This is why you have so many people in the music world and they’re unhappy. They are tired of living that image. When you say what would I say to someone who asks, "Was that an image?" everybody they watching is playing an image. That’s not them. They didn’t grow up with that. TV made that or the video made that or the money made that or the concerts made that. They’ve taken on a whole different image. That’s what’s really destroying the people because what happens when they can no longer live that image no more? They got everybody thinking they’re bling-bling forever and now you can’t bling-bling. What happens now? Do you go to drugs? Do you go to crack? I mean…where do you go? This is what happens to these stars when they so-called "fall."

Calvin: When you announced you were quitting rap and giving your life to the Lord, reactions were mixed. Some even snickered in disbelief of your sincerity.

Mason: I think the thing that makes me get a lot of heat is because it was various artists before me that went forward and said they was gonna give their lives to the Lord. They didn’t live up to their part. So now all the weight is on me, but really the weight is on God. Because of them falling, God is not gonna allow me to fall because He knows there are too many people watching me. And He knows I’m sincere. Not to say they weren’t sincere. We’re in two separate boats. They came to the Lord when they were at the bottom. They came to the Lord when they was bankrupt or on drugs. That’s not my story.

Calvin: What is your story? You were bling-blinging something terrible and yet you gave up everything. What did you actually give up?

Mason: When I came to the Lord I gave up everything. I gave up the cars. I gave up the jewelry. I gave up the money. I gave up everything…the lifestyle. The way of thinking, the heart, the eyes, the ears…I don’t even care to listen to what I used to listen to or look at what I used to look at or think about what I used to think about. Even though every time, even as you’re being a saint, the devil tries to bring those things back. But you have to always realize, I came this far by faith. They let me get too far. God has already resurrected me in every area. He’s already given me back stuff that I lost, so I’ve come too far to go back. So when people be like "I’m worried that he’s gonna be another one of those…" No. Those people went back right away. They went back within a year’s time. It’s been way over a year so they might as well get used to it. Get used to it!

Calvin: Explain why you say Mase is dead.

Mason: When God snatched me out of that, it was just my time to be out of that. When a person dies you may want them to stay, but it’s nothing you can do about that. It’s God’s time. So when I came out of that world, it was God’s way of just letting one person die and raising another person.

Calvin: Are you happy?

Mason: Yeah, because now when I get money, I don’t have to look over my shoulder for it. I don’t have to screen my calls. I don’t have to worry about who’s at the door. People don’t understand. That’s a lifestyle. You have a lot of great things, but you have a lot of negative that comes with it, too. You gotta worry about if somebody is gonna knock that door down for that money with them guns. People will do anything for money. So if you’re a person with a lot, you got a lot to watch.

Black Rob hadn’t put out an album in five years prior to his latest release and that ain’t whoa. Once the backbone of Bad Boy Records, B.R. put the label on his back with his Buckwild-laced hit, “Whoa,” and led an Uptown resurgence long before Cam’ron painted the town pink. Since then, however, the troubled rapper has had to deal with a string of endless setbacks, including health and legal troubles that have been harder for him to shake than Donald Trump trying to do that dance made famous in Rob’s hood.

But Blacko’s back and that is whoa. Poised to bring the house that Diddy built back to prominence once again, Rob has readied The Black Rob Report, chocked full of the same street anthems and vivid storytelling that made his debut album a success. Always engaging, Black Rob talks about his kidney troubles, his robbery and gun charges, and shares his life story from the past five years, which is as interesting as any of his albums. He’s ready.

AllHipHop.com: What was it like putting this album together for you during the past five years, which seemed to be particularly tumultuous for you?

Black Rob: It was like something I had to do. It was just me making music. Like I say all the time, I’m trying to look past Life Story. That’s a classic, we always gonna know that and respect that. But you know, I can’t be just up under that “Whoa” like that. You got artists that went from one record to another, and they always had that record in the background. So that’s what I’m trying to do. I need to have a couple more joints I can do on stage.

AllHipHop.com: I saw you perform a few months back at Manhattan’s SOB’s

Black Rob: Yeah, for the Big L [tribute] joint.

AllHipHop.com: It’s funny that you mention that you need more hits or songs to perform, because the crowd was definitely excited to see you that night.

Black Rob: I feel that, especially that night. I could see it in their eyes. They had the look; especially the dudes in the front. They was like, ‘Ayo, come on, dog, that’s hot. I’m gonna do what I do, trust me.

AllHipHop.com: Do you feel like you’re in the familiar position of having to put Bad Boy on your back again?

Black Rob: Yeah.

AllHipHop.com: Is that something that you enjoy, that responsibility?

Black Rob: I do. Because, sometimes Puff pushes me to the limit. Like, sometimes I feel like he don’t got faith in my joints.

AllHipHop.com: He drives you crazy?

Black Rob: Yeah, that, too. That, too, man. [Laughs.] But, hey man, that’s what families do. That’s what it is. He drives me crazy. I drive him crazy.

AllHipHop.com: Are you contributing any verses to the Biggie duets album?

Black Rob: Yeah, I’m doing the “Gimme The Loot” joint right now as we speak.

AllHipHop.com: That’s a good track for you to jump on...

Black Rob: And why not?

AllHipHop.com: Because the story telling aspect of it

Black Rob: Okay, okay.

AllHipHop.com: Not that I expect you to run my jewels!

Black Rob: Okay, my dude. It’s real for you to think like that, because I thought like that. When they said they wanted me, I was like, ‘Ah man, I know what made you n***as want me for that s**t. That’s what I do. That ain’t what I do, but what I used to do.

AllHipHop.com: Is the storytelling aspect something that try to put forth? Or does it come naturally for you?

Black Rob: It comes natural, because when I used to hear Rap back in the days, people used to tell stories. All these great story tellers, Slick Rick, B.I.G., everyone that came before me; Spoonie G, Busy B, Grandmaster Caz, Melle Mel, so when I’m coming up they telling me stories. They ain’t talking about no bulls**t, they talking about real s**t.

AllHipHop.com: You mentioned Slick Rick and Biggie, and people put you right along with the greatest when it comes to storytelling despite you only releasing one album. How?

Black Rob: That’s crazy. I got a street following with that, too. I used to be that Radio Raheim kid at one period in my life, I can’t remember what year it was. I had the radio and the tape with the beats on it. I used to go through 139th [in Harlem], Big L, McGruff, all them cats was out there. I’m rhyming with these dudes. I do it all, but that story s**t, they was like you got that, dog.

AllHipHop.com: What are your thoughts on your former label mate, Ma$e, joining G-Unit?

Black Rob: Hey, man. You know what? That n***a is backsliding, man. I don’t know, man. Me? I don’t play with God like that. I don’t know what his motive is, because I don’t talk to Ma$e. You don’t play with God like that, man. Me? I respect God, I know he there, and I know he’s the reason that I’m still here. But you ain’t gonna hear me spitting bulls**t and going to church on Sunday, you know what I mean? That’s a hypocrite.

AllHipHop.com: Did you ever feel like giving up Rap in the past five years, because of the health and legal battles?

Black Rob: Nah. I don’t know what it is that drives me, man. I really don’t, man. It can’t be the honeys. I’m like Wilt Chamberlain, man. That’s real. But I ain’t gonna go out like Wilt. No disrespect to Wilt. He’s’ the greatest of all time.

AllHipHop.com: In two games!

Black Rob: [Laughs.] So it’s like, that ain’t what drives me. It’s just I see my kids, I guess? I don’t know. I guess my will to live the way I been living. I spoiled myself, man.

AllHipHop.com: Did your health problems force you to change your eating habits and your diet?

Black Rob: Oh yeah, no doubt. Hell yeah. All that greasy s**t, that fried s**t, I can’t do it. I’m on strictly no sodium at all. My s**t tastes bland like a motherf***er.

AllHipHop.com: Was this problem something you ignored?

Black Rob: Yep. I ignored it, but I never knew I had it. My moms had it but never spread the work. Nothing, you know what I’m saying? Me wildin’ out, it just got worse.

AllHipHop.com: How much time were you actually locked up in the past five years? Some people thought you were out, some thought you were in, people didn’t quite know.

Black Rob: I was locked up a couple of times, man. The gun s**t, when I got bagged with that. I f**ked around came to court, they locked me up again. I probably did 13-14 months. But the five before that, I ran from they ass. Yeah! I got the rabbit in me when they come after me! Call me Rob Rabbit. [Laughs]

AllHipHop.com: Jails are big business in the U.S., making high profit margins at the expense of low-earning inmates. Do you think about that much?

Black Rob: I used to work in cold craft. You know what that is? N***as make. That’s crazy. I never worked in my life! They tried to make me wash walls! I was like, "Get the f**k out of here. Put me in the box, fam." We was making soap! And getting a quarter a day, dude; 50 cent at the most. These n***as is making billions of bars of f***ing soap. I hate jail, man. I hate that s**t with a f***ing passion, dog. You hear me? I f***ing hate that s**t. When I think about that sh*t, I get stressed, man.

AllHipHop.com: Did that compound your health problems?

Black Rob: Definitely.

AllHipHop.com: Is that when your health problems started?

Black Rob: Nah, when I was in jail, I was throwing it like Michael Jordan, n***a. I was flying out the gym. But when I got out, when I was out there on my little hiatus, I was in Atlanta and that’s when that s**t caught up to me.

AllHipHop.com: You stay out in Atlanta now?

Black Rob: Nah, I got a house out there, but I’m stationed in New Jersey.

AllHipHop.com: What ever happened to the Alumni crew?

Black Rob: Alumni is still here. Right now you gonna hear my man, Phenom; he gonna be on the promo tour with me. G.Dep got some more fire. Rudolph The Red, ugly. We still doing music. You gonna hear a lot of my artists on Bet On Black. These are dudes that I brought through Bad Boy; P gave the stamp of approval. These cats ain’t playing. We talk about what we been through. When I say alumni, we all been through the penitentiary. We don’t just talk about it. We trying to education the youth, make money, and just make good music.
